While the Pyle brand may not be as famous as the likes of Fender, Gibson or Ibanez, they can be applauded for their work in the entry-level market, and this super budget electric guitar package – featuring a guitar, amplifier and accessories – is a worthwhile solution for the complete beginner looking to experiment with this exciting instrument for the first time.

The Guitar

You can’t fault the looks on the guitar in this pack – it follows countless others and uses the tried-and-tested Stratocaster double-cutaway shape, with curves in all the right places, and a handful of colors to choose from. It’s comfortable to hold and light enough for prolonged practice sessions, whether standing or sitting, as it’s made from solid paulownia with a 25.5” scale length. There’s a bolt-on maple neck, with a rosewood fretboard and 22 frets, which will accommodate everything from power chords to high lead playing.

So it looks good, what about the sound? As you may expect from a pack of this price, the pickups are quite low-end and very simple, but for beginners they are no less than you’d need. Three single-coil pickups at the bridge, neck and middle positions, controlled by three knobs: a master volume and two individual tone controls, as well as a five-way pickup selector switch.

So it’s quite versatile and you can find a range of tones on this affordable guitar, while the vintage-style tremolo bridge with an included (but removable) whammy bar allows you to create cool vibrato effects.

The Amp and Extras

Aside from a decent guitar, what else do you get for your cash? Firstly there’s an amplifier – a crucial component if you want to make a sound! And the amp in this pack is a Pyle-produced model, featuring a 5” speaker and 10 watts of power. You won’t be gigging with it, but for bedroom practice and jamming with friends it works well. There’s a headphone jack for quiet practicing, as well as an auxiliary input so you can plug in an MP3 player or computer to jam along to your favorite tracks.

P_06LPSpecII-EBPP-df1801a4828ca7b8b9603e940919f6deControls are relatively simple too, with individual knobs for gain, volume, bass, and treble, as well as a clean/overdrive channel select switch, so there’s a little versatility, and plenty to play around with. The clean tone is clear and bright, while you can get some decent crunch and raspy overdrive that works well for rock and metal, although you will want to upgrade the amp if you’re looking to perform.

Talking of upgrades, this pack comes with a few accessories that aren’t particularly robust and may be worth replacing when you get the chance. However – for sheer convenience, allowing you to plug in and play as soon as you open the box – the cable, strap, plectrums, gig bag, and pitch pipe this set arrives with work fine.

We’ve established that the equipment on offer in this combo pack is pretty basic – but for such a wallet-friendly price it’s not surprising. However the guitar is very playable and comfortable, and makes a good platform on which to learn the instrument. The amp allows you to hear your first chords clearly – and is loud enough to annoy the neighbors! You may think about upgrading as soon as you start progressing, but this is an excellent set for complete beginners on a budget.
