BOSS NS-2 Noise Suppressor Pedal Review – Standard Boss Quality

4.9 out of 5 stars

Boss is one company you can count on to deliver the right tools for the job at the right cost. We all know about their effects pedals, but their more obscure models are the ones we would like to talk about today. Noise gate pedals are the unsung heroes of many good guitar rigs, yet you won't hear much about them anywhere.

It just so happens that Boss makes one of the most impressive noise gate pedals we have seen in a while. They have struck again with their simple, utilitarian design and circuitry that is bulletproof. Its name is NS-2 Noise Suppressor, and today we are going to introduce you to it.

Features

If there is one constant about Boss pedals, it's their form factor that is always the same, and probably always will be the same. Why fix something if it ain't broken, right? After all, some of the most memorable effects pedals come in that same enclosure. Aesthetics aside, the design itself works in terms of durability and reliability, so we can't really complain.

There are no real special features on the NS-2, until you pop open the cover and take a look inside. What you are going to see is a circuit that somewhat unique, and designed in a way that allows it to kick in and cut turn off with a great level of precision. That might not seem all that impressive if we were talking about any other pedal, but in terms of noise gates that is important.

Controls

Controls come in form of three knobs. It doesn't really take much to gain full reign over a noise gate pedal, which is a reoccurring theme in most models of this type. First two knobs are what actually matters here. One is your Threshold knob, and the other is the Decay knob. In other words, these two control points allow you to dial in exactly when the noise gate will kick in, and how sensitive the pedal will be. In most basic terms, that is all you really need from a pedal of this type. The third knob has two modes labeled Reduction and Mute. Pretty self explanatory stuff here.

Performance

When it comes to performance, there's one word that perfectly describes what Boss NS-2 has to offer, and that is precision. Threshold control is super sensitive, which both takes a learning period to master, and allows you to hit that sweet spot just right. Dial everything in according to your gear, and you won't have to worry about feedback or amp noise ever again. On top of that, the pedal doesn't affect the color of your tone, volume or any other aspect for that matter.

Conclusion

Boss NS-2 definitely takes the cake in the battle for the best noise gate pedal on the market. It's accurate, reasonably priced, and comes with just enough features where it's easy to use. Since noise gate pedals are supposed to be versatile tools, this package from Boss is a winning combination. If you are looking for a pedal of this type, Boss NS-2 should be on the very top of your list.
