Want to start learning how to play the guitar but don’t think you can afford it? Think again! This super-budget combo set includes a full-size electric guitar, an amplifier, a gig bag, and other accessories for a jaw-dropping $90 price tag! Is it an awesome find or a piece of junk? Let’s find out.

The Guitar

What can you expect for under $90? The guitar in this starter set is predictably as basic as you can get, but not bad all things considered. Made by a company called Best Choice Products, it’s a straightforward Strat-style model, featuring a double-cutaway shape that offers full access to all 22 frets of the rosewood fretboard, which sits on a sturdy bolt-on maple neck. The body is made from an unspecified solid wood, and finished in either glossy black, blue, green, or a very warm and attractive sunburst. As looks go, it’s not too dissimilar from other budget Strat-style guitars –competing with the likes of Pyle and even Squier pretty well.

The electronics on this guitar are what you find on many other guitars – three single-coil pickups. All are stock and very simple, but offer a clear, bright sound and give you a voice. These are controlled by a master volume control knob and two knobs for tone, as well as a five-way pickup selector switch. As for hardware, the guitar has a vintage-style tremolo bridge, with the all-important whammy bar. It will hold its tuning quite well, providing you don’t abuse the whammy bar too much.

In all, it’s clear this is a budget guitar – it doesn’t try to be anything else – but with a good set up (from your local guitar pro) you could get a lot of enjoyment from this affordable axe.

The Amp and Extras

If the guitar is basic, the amp is incredibly basic, but it does the job asked of it. It’s a small BC GA10 amplifier, which offers 10-watts of power – enough for practice sessions, and even jamming with another guitarist. The controls are limited, with just volume, bass, and treble knobs, and a channel selector switch, as well as a headphone socket. This is all good for keeping things simple, but not so useful for versatility. However, as soon as you start to develop, you’ll be able to upgrade the amp to something more powerful without too much hesitation.

You do get some extra accessories with this kit too, including a strap, a cable, plectrums, spare strings, and a nylon carry case. It won’t be a surprise to hear that these extras all feel a little flimsy, and would probably be the first thing on your shopping list to replace, but you can’t fault the convenience they provide – especially for under $90!

Conclusion

Whether you want to start playing guitar but have next-to-no budget, or aren’t even sure that playing the guitar is the right choice for you, this super-budget pack from Best Choice Products
could prove a wise purchase. With a basic but decent guitar, along with an amp and accessories that do what’s required, this affordable starter pack offers incredible value and convenience.
