There are brands which produce modern effects pedals, and then there are those who take innovation to a completely different level. TC Electronic definitely belongs to the latter category, and the pedal we are going to review today is all the proof your will ever need.

We are going to talk about their Sub ‘N' Up Octaver – a model which takes all the features found in some of the best octave pedals available at the moment, and adds a whole new dimension of awesome. This thing has ‘Welcome to the future' written all over it, and we love it.

Features

An initial look at the Sub ‘N' Up doesn't really give away its true nature. It's a stylish little pedal that comes with a familiar control layout and I/O options. The case is pretty durable and features one of the better looking graphical designs we have seen in this segment of effects pedals.

Sub ‘N' Up comes with true bypass, and more importantly, their TonePrint technology. In simple words, TonePrint allows you to create and edit your own octave effect using their editing software, which you can then transfer to the pedal. That is definitely not something you see every day.

Controls

The control panel is pretty familiar with its four a knobs and a stealthy little switch in the middle. You have your standard Dry knob which determines the blend of this effect and your raw guitar signal. Next is the upper octave level control followed by two sub-octave level control knobs.

That switch we have mentioned allows you to choose three modes of operation. There is polyphonic, TonePrint and Classic. Pretty self-explanatory what each of these modes offers. Classic mode is your standard mono octave, while the TonePrint activates whichever preset you have loaded on the pedal at that moment.

Performance

The key word here is versatility. Even if we completely exclude the TonePrint setting, TC Electronic Sub ‘N' Up Octaver packs a hefty punch with it's two standard modes. Tracking is rather decent, although this is definitely not the type of pedal you would want to play complex chords with. When it comes to what you can do in the TonePrint editor, the options are pretty much limitless. You can spend hours upon hours making new and exciting octave effects. In all seriousness, this is one of the most capable octave pedals on the market at the moment.

Conclusion

If you want the latest and greatest in terms of futuristic features, TC Electronic Sub ‘N' Up Octaver is going to be the perfect match for you. This pedal simply pushes the limits of what is possible.

The TonePrint technology is a proven concept that you can find in a lot of TC Electronic's models, so there's no need to be skeptical whether or not it will produce the performance they claim it can. Best of all, the price is very reasonable considering what this package brings to the table.
